SNOW ON THE SLOPES
“… the 1200 mts of the north eastern Alps are like the 1800 mts of the central and western ones ....”
"...in the nearby Fusine the lowest temperature in the Alps is continuosly reached..."
Sella Nevea, Tarvisio, Bovec and surrounding areas are well known to be a snowy place. In general there is a rule that state that the 1200 mt of the Julian Alps are like the 1800 mt of the central and wester Alps. This is because cold north eastern winds blows here directly from Russia, ensuring low temperature and encountering the humid clouds arriving from the sea, an ideal condition for abundant snow falls.
It is not a case that in 2009 Sella Nevea and Bovec were the snowiest place in Europe, with 13 mt of snow falls. In the picture gallery there are some pics taken in May and July that can prove this.
Don’t be surprised of hearing the locals telling you that on the 1st of May it is often possible to ski to the bottom of the valley at 1150mt above sea level. This happens so many time during the international event of “Sci Alpinistica del Monte Canin” a famous international competition of off-slope ski.
In a moment where global warming seems to jeopardize the Alps snow supply, Sella Nevea will be more and more relaying on its natural snowy gift.
Despite the tendency of getting abundant natural snow, artificial snow covers 90% of the slopes under 1800mt. So, whatever the conditions are, snow is assured.
